Syrian, French Presidents Hold talks on Regional Developments

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday to review regional developments and ongoing efforts to promote stability, according to reports.

Al-Sharaa emphasized the need to support the Syrian political process and strengthen security across the country, the statement said. The conversation also covered the comprehensive deal reached between the Syrian government and the SDF terrorist group. Macron voiced support for the agreement and stressed that it must be implemented in a way that preserves Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

Macron reaffirmed France’s dedication to continued coordination in aiding Syria and its citizens along the path toward stability, justice, and reconstruction.

On Friday, Damascus announced a comprehensive ceasefire and phased agreement between the government and the SDF, which includes an immediate halt to hostilities and steps to integrate military and administrative structures. The deal also calls for the withdrawal of forces from contact lines and the deployment of Interior Ministry security units to the city centers of Hasakah and Qamishli as part of broader stabilization efforts.

The agreement is designed to unify Syrian territory, reinforce state authority, and promote full institutional integration through joint coordination and reconstruction initiatives.

Earlier, on Jan. 18, the Syrian government and the SDF had signed a ceasefire and integration deal, but Damascus accused the group of repeated and “serious” violations. The latest agreement follows a military operation by the Syrian Army that regained large areas in eastern and northeastern Syria after the SDF repeatedly breached previous arrangements.
