MDES Highlights Workforce Development Month, Labor Day, National Employ Older Americans Week, and Upcoming Energy Expo

The Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) proudly celebrates Workforce Development Month by recognizing the dedication, resilience, and vital contributions of Mississippi’s workers. Throughout September, MDES will spotlight the programs, initiatives, and people who support job seekers, empower employers, and strengthen communities across the state.
Workforce Development Month begins with Labor Day, a moment to honor the men and women who fuel Mississippi’s economic growth. Following the holiday, MDES will launch People Behind the Promise, a social media series featuring the individuals who bring the agency’s mission—Helping Mississippians Get Jobs—to life. These stories will highlight workforce professionals whose commitment transforms opportunities into meaningful employment for Mississippians statewide.
From September 20–26, MDES will observe National Employ Older Americans Week through a dedicated social media campaign. This annual recognition underscores the tremendous value older workers bring to the workforce through their experience, institutional knowledge, and leadership. MDES remains committed to supporting workers of all ages with job search assistance and a wide range of employment services.
MDES also continues expanding access to innovative technology that supports job seekers. A key resource in this effort is the Navigator device, which improves access to essential workforce tools throughout Mississippi. This innovative program provides job seekers with direct, face-to-face access to Employment Specialists who can assist with resume writing, interview preparation, job search strategies, and more. The Navigator streamlines the way Mississippians connect with MDES services, improving the overall customer experience.
Executive Director William J. Ashley, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of celebrating the people who advance Mississippi’s workforce mission, stating: “Workforce Development Month gives us an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to helping Mississippians secure stable, meaningful employment. Our team and partners work tirelessly each day to strengthen our workforce and bolster the economic stability of communities across our great state.”
Workforce Development Month will wrap up at the end of September, followed by the Oct. 1 Energy Expo and Job Fair, a major event connecting Mississippians with opportunities in the state’s growing energy sector.
