A Name Rooted in History: Overmountain Trace Honors the Legacy of the Overmountain Men

Today, their story lives on in a name with deep ties to the history of the region: Overmountain Trace.

In the fall of 1780, the Revolutionary War had reached a critical point in the South. Following major British victories at Charleston and Camden, British Lt. Col. Patrick Ferguson moved into North Carolina, establishing a camp at Gilbert Town near present-day Rutherfordton. His mission was to recruit Loyalist support and protect the western flank of British Gen. Charles Cornwallis.

From there, Ferguson issued a warning to Patriot settlers west of the mountains: end their resistance or face the consequences.

Instead of surrendering, they answered the threat by coming together.

Militia from western North Carolina, Virginia and what is now Tennessee gathered and began the difficult journey across the mountains. These men would become known to history as the Overmountain Men.

Their pursuit of Ferguson ultimately led them to Kings Mountain, where, on October 7, 1780, Patriot forces defeated Ferguson and his Loyalist troops in a battle that became a pivotal moment in the Southern campaign of the American Revolution. The victory disrupted British plans in the region and helped shift momentum back toward the Patriot cause.

Their story is one of courage, determination and the strength found in moving forward together — a legacy that continues to be remembered throughout the Carolinas.

It is also the history behind the name Overmountain Trace, a new independent living community preparing to welcome residents in Elkin, North Carolina.

The name was chosen with a sense of place in mind — honoring the history, resilience and spirit of the region while creating a community designed for the generations who call it home today.
